Scholarships in college are money that students are awarded by schools in the United States where the purpose is to reduce the student’s costs to school. A scholarship may vary in how much the school gives out from student to student, some students may receive a scholarship of 1% of the school’s total costs and another student may receive 100% of the school’s total costs. The total cost the scholarship covers is all the school’s costs such as tuition, apartment and food. Thus, a scholarship can vary between 1 and 100 percent. A scholarship is what you as an esports player want to look for when looking for college.

However, more and more schools have now started to award “full-ride scholarships”, which is a scholarship on the entire college costs, from the esports costs to the tuition costs.

Harrisburg University, which won ESPN’s inaugural College Esports tournament in May 2019, became the first school to award full-ride scholarships to their entire 16-man team in 2018.

As it sounds, your academic scholarship is a scholarship you get based on how good your grades and tests like the SAT and Duolingo are. So the school evaluates these results and then they give you a scholarship. This scholarship will not be as big as your esports scholarship but it will still be a good part of the total cost, it is hard to say how much you will get because each school has different requirements on how good your grades and tests should be.

international scholarship

An international scholarship is also exactly what it sounds like, a scholarship you will receive because you are an international student. Just like an academic scholarship, this scholarship is entirely dependent on school to school how much they teach. Every college in the US LOVES international students, that’s why they give out an international scholarship because they want to attract as many international students as possible.

Can i combine my scholarships?

Yes! All these scholarships we have now gone through will be added together so that in the end you will receive a total scholarship. This is something that is fantastic for all students because you will get an international scholarship and also an academic scholarship which means that if you are at the right esport level to also get an esport scholarship you will be able to combine all these three and together they will form an incredibly good scholarship for you!

can my scholarship increase och decrease?

Yes! This may not sound so good that your scholarship may be reduced, but this is not something you need to worry about. A scholarship is only reduced if you break the school’s rules or behave incredibly badly. This is not something you need to worry about as a scholarship is very rarely reduced. Your scholarship can also be increased to something positive instead. If you as an esport player perform incredibly well, your esport coach can reward you by increasing your scholarship. This is something you should keep in mind when you play, if you perform even better than your expectations you will get a higher scholarship which is absolutely incredible!

do all schools give scholarships?

Both yes and no! In principle, all schools will give you international and academic scholarship, however, there are rules that mean that schools located in NCAA Division 3 cannot give you athletic scholarship. This means there is a risk that if a D3 school hears from you, they may not offer an athletic scholarship. This is not something you need to worry about, instead of giving out athletic scholarships, these college coaches usually enlist the help of other funds from the school to help with the costs anyway. It is also the case that the esport scholarship is not always in the athletic scholarship fund, which means that some D3 schools can issue an esport scholarship to you even if they are in Divison 3. To sum up the question of whether all schools can issue a scholarship, black in principle Yes.

In other words, if you are very good at your game there are chances for a full scholarship, it is not something you should expect or aim for, as it is so rare.
